Public Meetings on Protecting Sources of Drinking Water
The Essex Region Source Protection Committee is seeking preliminary consultation on studies being completed as part of the Source Water Protection Planning. Landowners, businesses, and residents in the "Intake Protection Zones" around municipal drinking water are encouraged to attend and review the following information:
-
Preliminary mapping of Intake Protection Zone areas
-
How runoff from heavy rains may pick up pollutants and affect water quality in local watersheds and near shore waters of Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and Lake Erie
-
What land use activities could pose a threat to drinking water sources
-
How to submit comments and be involved
-
Next steps towards source protection policies
The area of land surrounding a municipal drinking water intake is an Intake Protection Zone, where special care must be taken in the use and handling of chemicals and other potential contaminants. The science-based Assessment Report generated for the Essex Region Source Protection Area, will identify potential threats to the lakes and rivers which are sources for our municipal drinking water systems.
Public Meetings have been scheduled for each intake protection zone area across the region and include a presentation at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. We want to share proposed dates as well as extend an invitation to participate. To see maps of the Intake Protection Zone areas please visit essexregionsourcewater.org.
